Holness finds Gov't MP's branded Easter bun gesture in poor taste

ROBERT Chin's branding of Easter buns distributed in his Manchester Southern constituency did not go down well with his boss, Prime Minister Andrew Holness. "When I saw it I made sure to enquire whether or not public funds were used, and I was assured that no public funds were used," Holness told the Jamaica Observer last Thursday. That assurance, he suggested, was satisfactory because the resources that were committed by the Ministry of Finance for parliamentarians to help constituents during the three COVID-19 weekend lockdowns - $2 million each - were made available only last Wednesday. A week before, photos of the Easter buns in green boxes with a white strip bearing photos of Chin and four members of his Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) team, a bell (which is the JLP's symbol) with an X beside it, and the words "With the compliments of Team Manchester Southern" were circulated on social media. The gesture was described as vulgar by many people, while others have defended the MP. Last Thursday Holness, who is also leader of the JLP, made reference to Chin's action when asked to assess the performance of his first-term MPs since the party was returned to power in general elections last September. "I have said to them that we have to consider what is in good taste for the public and we also have to be respectful not just of the workers but the general population - what does the general population think," Holness said. He said that aside from what he had seen with the Easter buns, his own assessment is that the first-term MPs "are all eager to establish themselves in their constituencies, so they're working very hard". "What I've tried to do is to give them a structure within which to work, so we've put a more robust structure in the CDF (Constituency Development Fund), so there's greater accountability and greater targeting of resources. So, you're going find that this crop of MPs will be able to show more on the ground than ever before," Holness said. "Internally, we're also training them to understand Parliament, to understand their role in Parliament, so you will see them participating in debates from a much more informed position and making really solid contributions to debates," he added. Of the 49 seats won by the JLP in the general election 13 were secured by first-timers.
Judge refuses to sequester jury in George Floyd murder case

MINNESOTA, United States (AP) - The judge in the George Floyd murder case refused a defence request to immediately sequester the jury yesterday, the morning after the killing of a black man during a traffic stop triggered unrest in a suburb just outside Minneapolis. The request came from the attorney for former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin. Defence attorney Eric Nelson argued that the jurors could be influenced by the prospect of what might happen as a result of their verdict. "Ultimately, your honour, the question becomes will the jury be competent to make a decision regardless of the potential outcome of their decision," Nelson said. Judge Peter Cahill said he will not sequester the jury until next Monday, when he anticipates closing arguments will begin. He also denied a defence request to question jurors about what they might have seen about unrest following Sunday's police shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Centre. In the wake of the shooting, hundreds of protesters broke into about 20 businesses at a shopping centre, jumped on police cars and hurled rocks and other objects at police in Brooklyn Centre. Officers in riot gear fired gas and flash bang grenades. Prosecutor Steve Schleicher argued against sequestering the Floyd jury, saying: "I don't think that would be an effective remedy." He also opposed questioning the jurors. "World events happen," Schleicher said. "And we can't have every single world event that might affect somebody's attitude or emotional state or anything be the grounds to come back and re-voir dire all the jurors." The judge had previously asked jurors to avoid news during the trial. The ruling came as the trial entered its third week, with the prosecution close to wrapping up its case and giving way to the start of the defence. Prosecutors built their case on searing witness accounts, experts condemning Chauvin's use of a neck restraint, and medical authorities attributing Floyd's death to a lack of oxygen. When testimony resumed yesterday morning Dr Jonathan Rich, a cardiology expert from Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, echoed earlier experts in saying that Floyd died of low oxygen levels from the way he was held down by police. He rejected defence theories that Floyd died of a drug overdose or a heart condition. "It was the truly the prone restraint and positional restraints that led to his asphyxiation," the expert said. In fact, he said, "Every indicator is that Floyd had actually an exceptionally strong heart." Rich said he had reviewed Floyd's autopsy report. He said that some narrowing of the arteries is extremely common, and that Floyd had a mildly thickened or mildly enlarged heart but that that would be normal in someone with high blood pressure. Corroborating other experts' testimony, Rich said that Floyd was "restrained in a life-threatening manner", noting among other things that he was face down on the ground, a knee was on his neck, his hands were cuffed behind his back and being pushed upward, and a knee was on the lower half of his body. Rich said that as one officer noted on video that Floyd was passing out, police probably still could have saved his life if they had repositioned him so that his lungs could expand again. And once an officer noted that Floyd's pulse had stopped, police still had a significant opportunity to save his life by administering CPR, he said. Derek Chauvin, 45, who is white, is charged with murder and manslaughter in Floyd's May 25 death. Police had been called to a neighbourhood market where Floyd was accused of trying to pass a counterfeit bill. Prosecutors say Chauvin had his knee on Floyd's neck as the 46-year-old black man lay pinned to the pavement for 9 1/2 minutes. Bystander video of Floyd, pinned by Chauvin and two other officers as he cried "I can't breathe!" and eventually grew still, sparked protests and scattered violence around the US.
Digicel donates items worth US$500,000 to St Vincent's volcano relief

DIGICEL Group yesterday announced the donation of US$500,000 worth of much-needed items to support the urgent relief efforts in St Vincent & the Grenadines caused by the Le Soufriere volcanic eruption. The telecommunications company, in a release, said it will work with the Government of St Vincent & the Grenadines to identify immediate needs, noting that with thousands of people evacuated from the red zone and housed in shelters and significant ash fall resulting from the explosive eruptions of La Soufriere affecting the entire island, the situation is developing and deteriorating. The company said, too, that it will assist in procuring and shipping items identified as urgently needed in the early stages by the National Emergency Management Organisation. "With our priorities being helping to keep people safe and keeping them connected, it's at times like these that our natural instinct is to want to do everything we can to help. As a company, as a team and as the Digicel family, we are here for the people of St Vincent & the Grenadines and ready to help in a meaningful way," said Digicel Group Chairman Denis O'Brien.
